I first saw Epic 2015 (updated from Epic 2014) in 2005 when I was a freshman in college. It goes through the history of the Internet and dives into the future, forecasting where technology will be by 2015. The movie gave me another “ah ha” moment that made me realize I wanted to work with these cutting edge technologies. It’s great now looking at it and seeing it was created by Robin Sloan, a name that is much more meaningful to me now than it was 5 years ago.
Today I am working with a product that very well could be a piece of the internet of the future. While this movie didn’t predict our real-time distributed network to be the future of technology, it’s amazing how many of these predicted technologies are already being used on a regular basis. They predicted we would be using iPods to share information about traffic, the weather, and personal anecdotes in real-time. Can you say…iPhone? Twitter? Foursquare? And the newspaper industry is a whole other story…
If you have the time, watching this video is well worth the 10 minutes. It really makes you think about the past, present, and future state of the web and technology.
